BJP redraws poll strategy for Bhopal as Congress fields Digvijaya Singh

first_imgBhopal: The Congress’ move to nominate party veteran Digvijaya Singh from Bhopal Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh seems to have prompted the BJP to revisit its strategy to ward off any eventuality and retain its bastion of the last three decades in the high-stake elections. The BJP’s worry stems from the fact that the Congress had won three out of eight assembly segments in Bhopal constituency in the assembly elections held last year. In remaining five seats, the BJP witnessed a slide in its margin. Bhopal constituency is spread over eight assembly segments, namely Berasia, Bhopal Uttar, Narela, Bhopal Dakshin-Paschhim, Bhopal Madhya, Govindpura, Huzur and Sehore. Officially, the BJP has dismissed that Digvijaya Singh could pose any challenge to the party in the constituency. However, if a BJP leader to be believed, the party is working on a “plan B” over selection of candidates. According to rumours in political circles, former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan might be in reckoning as a contestant, as Muslim voters in the constituency view him as a moderate saffron leader. Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&K”I cannot say anything right now. The BJP’s central leadership will take a call on the candidate,” state BJP president Rakesh Singh told PTI Sunday when he was asked whether Chouhan is in contention. “He (Chouhan) is a former chief minister. The central leadership will decide whether to field him in Lok Sabha polls or not,” the state BJP chief said. He laughed away Digvijaya Singh as a lightweight. “You all consider him a tough candidate. I was just now telling my friend that Singh is going to lose for sure. He is not that figure who can win elections, but he is a face that can vitiate the atmosphere,” he said. The Congress had last won the Bhopal seat in 1984. Announcing Digvijaya Singh’s name Saturday, Chief Minister Kamal Nath said that he had offered Bhopal seat to the former chief minister, who wanted to contest from his home turf Rajgarh. Meanwhile on Sunday, Rakesh Singh, Chouhan and state BJP organisational secretary Suhas Bhagat went into a huddle in Bhopal, a party leader said. The trio discussed about picking a tough contestant against Digvijaya Singh, according to BJP sources. What might have prompted the BJP to visit the drawing board is the outcome of the last assembly elections wherein the saffron party ceded three assembly seats to the Congress. Moreover, four lakh out of total 18 lakh voters in the constituency are Muslims, who generally vote for Congress.last_img read more

Matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs SC dismisses review plea of 21

first_imgNew Delhi: The Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed the plea filed by 21 Opposition leaders seeking a review of its April 8 order directing the Election Commission to increase random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs to five polling booths per assembly segment. “We are not inclined to modify our order,” a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said. The plea was filed by opposition leaders led by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss account details under automatic exchange framework Senior advocate A M Singhvi, appearing for petitioners, told the bench that the apex court had increased the random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs to five polling booths per assembly segment and they are now seeking that it should be increased to 25 per cent at least. “It will be for the satisfaction of confidence building measures,” Singhvi tod the bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna. Singhvi said the present increase of random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs to five polling booths per assembly segment amounted to a meagre two per cent and petitioners are seeking that it be raised to 25 per cent at least. Also Read – Trio win Nobel Medicine Prize for work on cells, oxygen The apex court had on April 8 directed the Election Commission to increase random matching of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in five polling booths per assembly segment from one booth. The top court, however, had not agreed to the demand of 21 Opposition leaders for counting of at least 50 percent of VVPAT slips with EVMs in every assembly segment. The Opposition leaders had sought the review of the apex court’s order, saying the “increase from 1 to 5 is not a reasonable number and does not lead to satisfaction desired by this court”. “The petitioners submit that the aforesaid increase to a mere 2 per cent is not sufficient and will not make any substantial difference to the situation that existed prior to the passing of the impugned order. “Therefore, even though the petitioners have succeeded on merits of their contention, their success does not resolve their grievance or cause any meaningful change to the situation that they were originally aggrieved,” the plea had said. Referring to earlier observations of the apex court, it had said the 2 per cent increase in random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs would not achieve the purpose of raising “public confidence in the integrity of the electoral process”. The plea had opposed the EC’s argument, which was accepted by the court, that as the elections were nearby and hence it would not be viable to increase the number of random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs. “It is submitted that, once this court agrees that the number of EVMs that should be subjected to VVPAT verification should be increased to a ‘reasonable number’, not increasing the same to a number which is ‘reasonable’ because it may not be ‘viable’ to do so renders the entire exercise otiose and futile,” the plea had said. Consequently, the ‘viable number’ must also necessarily be reasonable, it had said, alleging that at many booths in Andhra Pradesh the VVPAT machines were not working properly.last_img read more

UKs May could set resignation date in coming days

first_imgLondon: UK Prime Minister Theresa May could set a date for her resignation in the coming day, said Graham Brady, the chairman of an influential committee of backbench Conservative MPs, the media reported on Saturday. Speaking to the BBC, Brady said he expects a “clear understanding” of that timetable once she has met the 1922 Committee — an elected body of Conservative MPs that represents backbenchers and oversees the party’s leadership contests — which she will do on Wednesday. He said the 1922 Committee had asked her to give “clarity” about her plans for the future, and she had “offered to come and meet with the executive”. “It would be strange for that not to result in a clear understanding (of when she will leave) at the end of the meeting.” The Prime Minister has that said she will step down when her Brexit deal is ratified by Parliament, but some MPs want a fixed date. When asked about running for the party leadership, Brady told the BBC: “It would take an awful lot of people to persuade me. “I’m not sure many people are straining at the leash at the moment to take on what is an extraordinarily difficult situation.” In March, Mrs May pledged to stand down if and when Parliament ratified her Brexit withdrawal agreement, but did not make it clear how long she intends to stay if no deal is reached. The UK had been due to leave the European Union on March 29, but the deadline was pushed back to October 31 after Parliament was unable to agree a way forward.last_img read more

Casablanca Troubles in implementing the Electronic Bus Ticket System

first_imgCasablanca – The joint electronic ticket system between the Urban Transportation Authority and CasaTram has been experiencing an unexpected delay in its implementation. As a result, urban buses have become more overcrowded than ever as passengers now have to wait their turn to purchase the ticket from the bus driver.According to Al-Akhbar, the execution of the new system is delayed for many reasons, mainly indecisiveness about many procedures. The most significant issues currently being resolved are revenue sharing between the two companies, ticket prices, the information-sharing and the technical support system. Youssef El Ouardighi, the Director of Human Resources at Medina Bus, states that the company has invested MAD 50 million to equip 800 buses with the technology, and that it is now technically and logistically prepared to subscribe to the Electronic Joint Ticket System. He adds that the company is currently awaiting the decision of the relevant authorities to implement the system. In a phone interview with Al-Akhbar, El Ouardigui states that the price of the ticket will be affordable to the public. However, he said that the company that manages urban transportation in Casablanca does not have any information about the expected ticket price and that the Medina council and the Urban Transportation Management Agency, are still negotiating the issue. The Medina Bus Director of Human Resources has announced that so far, only 30,000 out of 80,000 tickets were distributed and that the company is providing prepaid cards for the public.last_img read more

NFL Week 13 Playoff Implications Be Thankful For Meaningful Games This Thanksgiving

UPDATE (Nov. 29, 3:52 p.m.): The interactive tables above have been updated to include the results of Thursday’s match-ups, and those games has been removed (the text of the article has not been updated).Turkey and football is an annual tradition. Turkey and meaningful football is a treat. So be thankful this year: When ranked by total playoff “swing” — a measure of how much each game affects the playoff picture1As measured by the cumulative amount of playoff probability at stake — three of the top four Week 13 games will take place on Thanksgiving. When the Chicago Bears visit the Detroit Lions in the first Thanksgiving Day game, the stakes are straightforward. The Bears are largely out of playoff contention, so all affected teams do better with a Lions loss — excluding the Lions, of course. You don’t need a complicated statistical model to tell you that the next game, between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, will have huge implications for the NFC East title race. Going into the game, the Eagles have a slight edge on the Cowboys, with a 55 percent chance to win the division. A win in Dallas would increase its division title chances to 82 percent; a loss would drop it to 36 percent. Outside of the NFC East, the Green Bay Packers would prefer an Eagles victory, and the 49ers would prefer a Cowboys victory.2The Packers own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Eagles, and the 49ers own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cowboys.Thursday night’s game between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers will have significant playoff implications, but probably not in the way envisioned when the schedule was drawn up. The NFC West title isn’t at stake; the Arizona Cardinals have crashed the divisional party this year. Arizona holds a two-game lead over both Seattle and San Francisco. The Lions, Cowboys and Eagles will all be rooting for a San Francisco loss. And though Arizona’s playoff chances are better with a 49ers loss, its division title chances are better with a Seattle loss. We’ll let the charts do the talking for the rest of Week 13’s games. The most meaningful non-Turkey Day game is between the New Orleans Saints and the Pittsburgh Steelers, with more than 90 percentage points of playoff probability on the line. But, to close out this column, we thought we’d highlight some of the more interesting (or infuriating, depending upon your perspective) playoff scenarios that emerged from the 50,000 simulations that form the basis for this weekly feature. You can try your own hand at this with ESPN’s excellent Playoff Machine tool. But the scenarios below at least have a veneer of statistical plausibility. In last week’s column, we mentioned there were five simulations in which a five-win team won the NFC South. With losses from both the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans last week, there are now 107 simulations in which a five-win team wins the NFC South, amounting to an 0.2 percent probability.3Of those 107 simulations, 89 resulted in a Carolina Panthers division title, and 18 resulted in a title for Atlanta. There were 2,029 instances (4 percent probability) in which an 11-win team did not make the playoffs. The Cowboys and the Eagles are the two teams most likely to suffer that fate. There were seven simulations in which a five-win team made the playoffs and an 11-win team did not. There were two simulations in which all four AFC North teams finished with 11 wins.A five-win division winner hosting a 12-win wild card team? That happened nine times in our simulations. read more

JT Barrett picks up another Big Ten award Buckeye pass defense still

The Buckeyes are scheduled to play the Terrapins on Saturday at noon. OSU redshirt-freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett (16) carries the ball during a game against Kent State Sept. 13. OSU won 66-0.Credit: Mark Batke / Photo editorBefore Ohio State coach Urban Meyer spoke at his weekly Monday press conference, the Big Ten announced that redshirt-freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett had been named the conference’s co-Freshman of the Week.Barrett’s award came after he threw for 330 yards and four touchdowns and gained 409 yards of total offense — the second best output in school history — in the win against Cincinnati on Saturday. Just four games into his career, he has already been named either Big Ten Freshman of the Week or co-Freshman of the Week three times, in addition to one Offensive Player of the Week award. While Meyer addressed Barrett’s development this season, he also took time to talk about the Buckeyes across the board as they come off the 50-28 win against the Bearcats.Meyer said he was “very pleased” with OSU’s offensive performance against Cincinnati. He said Barrett has been a strong “distributor” and the coaching staff is working to give him more responsibilities going forward. The champions on offense were: Senior wide receivers Devin Smith and Evan Spencer, redshirt-sophomore wide receiver Michael Thomas, redshirt-senior running back Rod Smith, Barrett, redshirt-junior tight end Nick Vannett and senior tight end Jeff Heuerman.Offensive players of the game were the entire offensive line and sophomore running back Ezekiel Elliott. The champions on defense were: sophomore defensive lineman Joey Bosa, senior defensive lineman Michael Bennett, junior linebacker Joshua Perry and junior cornerback Armani Reeves.Bosa was the defensive player of the game.Meyer said “the obvious concern is pass game” for his defense. The pass defense gave up 221 yards and three touchdowns to one Cincinnati player on Saturday.Meyer said there is a new “Thursday race” award, given to redshirt-sophomore running back Bri’onte Dunn this week for his work on kick coverage.Meyer said kick coverage will be a challenge against Maryland on Saturday. He called the Terrapin’s kick and punt returners some of the best in the Big Ten.He said he expects a “big time atmosphere” in College Park, Md., for the game.Meyer said the lapses in pass defense against Cincinnati were on the coaching staff as well as player execution.“We had four really bad plays that we have to get corrected,” Meyer said of the Buckeyes’ pass defense. He said the defense still “absolutely” has the potential to be a championship-caliber unit.Meyer said he was “really excited” to see the production OSU got from skill-position players against Cincinnati. The Buckeyes’ offense totaled 710 yards, with more than 300 yards both passing and rushing. The coach said the offensive line is picking up depth and improving four games into the season. He said he considers the OSU offense a “very good one, potentially a great one.”Meyer addressed a potential quarterback controversy next season between Barrett and senior Braxton Miller by saying: “Braxton is our quarterback.”Meyer said OSU had some fun with assistant strength and conditioning coach Anthony Schlegel after his takedown of a fan who rushed the field, but also had a serious conversation with him about potential consequences if something were to have happened to the fan.Meyer said the matchup with Maryland is another “big one” for his pass defense. read more
