TSC (The Spaceship Co.) production is also planned to take place at the Mojave Spaceport,” the statement said. “VG (Virgin Galactic) plans initial commercial operations at the Mojave, California Spaceport.” Following delivery of the spaceships to Virgin Galactic, The Spaceship Co. will supply flight hardware to additional commercial spaceline operators. Scaled said it has several other prospects. At a space conference this month in Los Angeles, Virgin Galactic vice president Alex Tai noted his company was planning to conduct its initial operations at Mojave. “There’s no greater place to get it done,” Tai said. On Dec. 14, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Branson, chairman of the Virgin Co.’s, announced an agreement in which Virgin Galactic would locate its headquarters and mission control at a spaceport to be developed in the southern portion of New Mexico. Construction of the spaceport in New Mexico will begin in 2007 and should be completed by 2009 or 2010. Virgin Galactic plans to start space flights out of New Mexico once construction of the spaceport is complete. The company envisions sending 50,000 customers to space in the first 10 years of operation. The company has taken in $10 million in deposits already. — Jim Skeen, (661) 267-5743 [email protected] local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. MOJAVE – While British billionaire Richard Branson picked New Mexico to base his passenger-carrying space planes, California will play a major role in the emerging commercial space tourism business, space advocates say. The new space industry will require many sites, including Mojave and the $225 million spaceport the state of New Mexico is planning to build, they say. “There’s going to be business from this project for California and many other states,” said Eric Daniels, spokesman for the California Space Authority. “Virgin Galactic will have operations in multiple states when it’s all said and done. California will be a player.” Branson’s Virgin Galactic and Mojave-based Scaled Composites – which developed and flew the first privately developed manned spacecraft, SpaceShipOne – partnered to form The Spaceship Company to build the next manned spacecraft.last_img read more
