Junior members of the HR team at steel company Corus played a key role incutting senior management positions after British Steel and Dutch aluminiumgiant Koninklijke Hoogovens merged. After the merger was announced in October 1999, these junior staff helped insupporting the redundancy process and to develop HR policies for the mergedcompany, including a health and safety policy. The company had to reduce the number of its senior managers from 800 to 500by the end of December. “This did not go down well with some of the senior HR people in thebusiness. “But they were candidates for some of the roles and I could not usethem,” he said. Johnston said that if British Steel had not merged the 6,050 UK redundanciesthat the company confirmed this month would have happened a year ago. Johnston said he was involved in the merger process the day after the chiefexecutives of the two companies had made the decision to join forces. “A lot of difficult decisions had to be made. We decided to do it fast.We probably got 95 per cent of appointments right and five per wrong. Getting95 per cent right fast is better than getting 98 per cent slow.” Related posts:No related photos.last_img read more

Mike Tomlin Postgame Press Conference

first_imgNew England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, left, speaks to Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin after an NFL football game Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, in Foxborough, Mass. The Patriots won 55-31. (AP Photo/Steven Senne)MT: Obviously a disappointing performance. Probably as disappointed as I have been, especially under the circumstances of how we were able to fight back there at the beginning of the second half. It was a 24-24 game and obviously they handled us and they handled us well. We’ve got to accept that and move forward. We will. We give them the credit. They were the better team tonight, obviously. And the scoreboard, stats and everything reflect that. For an injury standpoint, Vince Williams sustained a concussion, as did Ike Taylor. Those guys will be evaluated. Marcus Gilbert had an ankle injury. I’ll address any questions.Q: Mike, just off the top, any way to explain how many wide open receivers they had through the entire game?MT: We didn’t perform well.Q: Mike, you have talked about the effort and demeanor that you have wanted to see from this team. Did you see that down the stretch? Or did it look like the team quit to you?MT: Not good enough, not good enough. We are going to comb through this with a fine tooth comb, as we should. And those people who are lacking effort won’t be playing. It’s just that simple.Q: Mike, when you said this is probably the most disappointed as you have been, are you talking about this season?MT: This season.Q: Mike, why have Ben Roethlisberger out there at the end?MT: Because we have to get better and those are snap opportunities to get better. We ain’t turning it down, we ain’t running from anything. We have an opportunity to continue to work and get better, so we did that. The guys that were healthy were going to stay on the grass and finish the game.Q: Mike, when you fight back to 24-24 and then it’s 31-7 after that, what happened? Were you surprised?MT: We didn’t stop them. That’s the bottom line. We couldn’t stop them. We didn’t stop the run. We didn’t stop the pass.Q: Mike, is your first inclination to stick with it or do you re-evaluate the process at this point?MT: You re-evaluate everything. You have to after a performance like that and we will. It doesn’t necessarily mean we will change or change for the sake of changing, but we will look at every aspect of what we are doing and who we are doing it with because we can’t have performances like that.Q: I believe that was the most points the Steelers have ever allowed. Does that just get chalked up as a bad loss or does that mean something in the locker room?MT: No, you know, it’s a 55-point game. I don’t care if it’s the most points we have ever given up or not. It ain’t any more sickening or less sickening based on those results.Q: Mike, are you perplexed at all that this is happened or disappointed?MT: I am angry; disappointed. You know, we don’t have time for perplexed. You know, we are capable and better than that. We’ve got to be better than that. We weren’t, so we are going to fix it.Q: Any sense of that anger reflected in the team?MT: I’m not going to speak for them, I will let those guys speak for themselves.Q: At 24-24, what was your feel? Did you feel like that was a game you could win?MT:Absolutely, I did. Obviously the big punt return was a significant play, but we had overcome some significant plays to that point in the game. But, we didn’t.Q: Mike, you obviously looked at film on the Patriots and they had been struggling. Rob Gronkowski is back and it looks like he is healthy. How does that change the Patriots and what happened tonight?MT: I’m not going to speak for those guys. I think they are capable of speaking for themselves, you know, and their performance tonight obviously speaks for itself.Q: You only had two pass interference penalties all year and you had two on one drive. Is that sort of the thing you say ‘those things can’t happen’?  MT: It’s just kind of indicative of how we performed tonight.Q: Mike, the number of big pass plays, not only tonight, but all year. You know, that is something that you guys just don’t typically do. What’s happening there?MT: You know, I’m not ready to characterize the season, but tonight, obviously we were out of place. They executed well, that combination was lethal.–Postgame Transcript compiled by Patriots Media Relationslast_img read more

The Most Influential Websites in the World: Wikipedia #1, Twitter #4 With a Bullet

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… richard macmanus Tags:#Analysis#Features#NYT#Statistics#web 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…center_img A year ago we profiled an oddly-named service called ://URLFAN, which we concluded was a good ‘Influence Index’ for the Web. ://URLFAN ranks websites by popularity, based on blog mentions. Unlike analytics services like Alexa or Compete, ://URLFAN doesn’t measure website traffic. It’s similar to Technorati, only ://URLFAN ranks all websites and not just blogs. We noted in our original review that ://URLFAN’s ranking list will inevitably be biased towards users of social media – and in particular bloggers. That’s a relatively small proportion of the world, however we think it’s still a useful index because social media users are highly influential. With that in mind, which websites are currently ranked the most influential on the Web?://URLFAN is, as we write this, “currently ranking the popularity of 3,783,534 websites by parsing 302,023,552 blog posts from 5,948,937 blog feeds.”The list below is ://URLFAN’s all-time top 10. The number in brackets to the right of each item is last year’s top 10 ranking (Nov ’08).#1. en.wikipedia.org (1)#2. youtube.com (3)#3. flickr.com (2)#4. twitter.com (9)#5. google.com (4)#6. myspace.com (6)#7. facebook.com (-)#8. imdb.com (5)#9. nytimes.com (7)#10. apple.com (8)There is one new entrant, Facebook at #7. washingtonpost.com moved out of the top 10, dropping from #10 last year to #12 this year.Twitter is the biggest mover, up 5 places to #4.Wikipedia is still the most cited website on the Web, for social media users and bloggers. YouTube and Flickr, two oft-used media sharing services, occupy the next two spots.Last year we noted that there were 10 independent blogs in the top 100, including ReadWriteWeb. There are the same number this year, with a couple of new entrants. Here is the blog list circa November ’09, again with last year’s rank bracketed: #23 techcrunch.com (#25)#26 huffingtonpost.com (#32)#33 engadget.com (#28)#37 boingboing.net (#29)#39 gizmodo (-)#41 mashable.com (#91)#53 arstechnica.com (#50)#60 lifehacker.com (#63)#78 readwriteweb.com (#97)#93 smashing magazine (-)Finally, what’s new at ://URLFEED this year? You guessed it, a Real-Time Web feature! The site has introduced a Real-time Buzz Radar, which tracks buzzwords in the blogosphere. ‘Chrome OS’ is number 5 on the list currently, on the back of Google’s Chrome OS event last week.://URLFAN isn’t a perfect measure of influence – you could easily argue that Google’s PageRank is far better. However we continue to like the concept and we believe it’s an accurate and up-to-date reflection of influential websites on the Web. Ross Taylor scores a ton while Pragyan ojha creates history

first_imgNew Zealand captain Ross Taylor is not unfamiliar with the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as it was his home when he represented Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.So when his team was in dire straits on Friday, having lost two wickets for just 63 runs, he scored a century on a pitch he’s familiar with and rescued his team from embarrassment.Taylor scored his seventh century (177 minutes, 127 balls, 16x4s, 2x6s)- a superb 113 with his back against the wall- and helped his team finish the first day of the second and final Test on a highly satisfying 328 for six wickets before poor visibility cut short play. But by that time, New Zealand, trailing 0-1 in the series, were comfortably placed, thanks to half-centuries from Kruger van Wyk (63 batting, 85 balls, 9x4s) and opener Martin Guptill (53, 79 balls, 8x4s).The other unbeaten batsman is Doug Bracewell (30, 61 balls, 3x4s). Bracewell and van Wyk have so far added 82 for the seventh wicket, keeping New Zealand afloat. It was a day to remember for left-armer Pragyan Ojha, for not just taking a four-wicket haul but also for becoming the first specialist Indian spinner to open the bowling in a Test match.Captain MS Dhoni must have surely surprised opener Guptill, who faced the first ball, and many others by bringing Ojha on instead of pace spearhead Zaheer Khan. The last Indian spinner to bowl the first ball of a Test was late ML Jaisimha, a part-timer, in 1969.Zaheer, who went wicketless in the 24 overs he bowled in the first Test, shared the new balls with Ojha and struck with the fifth delivery as he had Brendon McCullum trapped leg before the wicket(LBW) when the Kiwis hadn’t even opened their account. It was first of the four LBW decisions of the day.advertisementThe rain, which was forecast, kept away for almost the entire day, though dark clouds remained for most of the playing time. And immediately after the play ended prematurely.Guptill and Kane Williamson (17) added 63 for the second wicket to infuse life after the sensational start in front of an almost empty stadium. At this score, Ojha, who captured six wickets in Hyderabad, had Williamson LBW.Guptill, who survived two chances, did not last long as he became Ojha’s second victim, caught by Gambhir at midwicket. Then came New Zealand’s partnership of the day, which made the Indian bowlers look highly ineffective. Despite being 89 for three wickets- all lost before the lunch interval- Taylor and Flynn scored 107 for the fourth wicket at a brisk rate in almost 19 overs.Taylor’s was almost blemishfree knock- his third century against India. Playing his 40th Test, he was particularly aggressive against Ojha and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. His flamboyance was best exhibited when he hammered four boundaries in an Ojha over on his way to 17th Test half-century off 46 balls, and his century off just 99 balls. He reached his hundred with a cut to the point fence off Ojha and then lofted him for his second six.It took Ashwin to break the Taylor-Flynn association with another LBW decision, as Flynn attempted a sweep shot.Soon after that, Suresh Raina at midwicket took a stunning catch off Ojha to signal the end of James Franklin (215/ 5) and the left-arm spinner also dismissed Taylor while he attempted a sweep shot.At 5.15 pm, it started pouring at the stadium. But the pitch and the bowlers’ run-up path as well as the areas on either side of the pitch were well covered.Number Crunching, Day One7- Number of centuries scored by Ross Taylor in 41 Tests. His ton on Friday was his 3rd against India in 8 matches. His score is also the highest individual score by any New Zealand batsman at this venue. Taylor improved on the record of John Wright who scored 58 in 1988-89 series.2- After Glen Turner’s 113 in Kanpur in 1976-77, Ross Taylor became only the second Kiwi captain to score a hundred on Indian soil.12- Number of half-centuries scored by Martin Guptil (53) in 26 Tests. It was his 2nd fifty against India in 7 Tests.11- Brenden McCullum failed to open his account. It was his 11th duck in 68 Tests- the 1st against India in 8 matches.4/90- The best bowling figures of Pragyan Ojha against New Zealand. His previous best was four for 107 in Ahmedabad in 2010-11 series328/6- The highest innings total of New Zealand at this venue. Their previous best was 233 in the 1995-96 series.63*- The highest score of Kruger van Wyk in his 7th match. His previous best was 39 against South Africa in Wellington in 2011-12 series.advertisementlast_img read more
