first_imgIndependent Councillor for the Stranorlar Electoral Area Frank McBrearty, has urged the electorate to use their vote in this Friday’s Local and European Elections as an important precursor for change. With elections due to take place this Friday 23rd May, the Raphoe based Councillor has stressed how important is it for voters to be actively involved in the democratic process. He said that the elections this Friday gives the people the opportunity to send a clear message to the country’s main political parties that they are both angry and dissatisfied with the policies of the current administration and that they demand an alternative to party politics. “I am urging everyone to get out and vote in Friday’s elections because – in doing so – the will of the people can be heard and made known to those in power.“The people of this country, especially here in Donegal, have suffered as a result of the policies and failures of the current and the previous administration.“I am urging all voters to use their vote wisely in these elections and to be an advocate for the change which we as a nation both want and deserve.”Speaking today following the publication of a Sunday Times/Behaviour & Attitudes poll which reported a strong increase in support among voters for Independent candidates in the run up to these elections, Cllr McBrearty spoke of his strong belief that the electorate have become disillusioned by party politics and now seek a viable and more attractive alternative. McBrearty added, “While I do not take the outcome of the vote this Friday for granted, today’s opinion poll is a strong indication that people feel incredibly let down by all the main political parties and now there is a growing appetite for a change of direction – a new path going forward.“These past number of years the citizens of this country have been lied to and have been let down by the party mainstays; they now feel despondent and rightly so.”“However, change can happen, but this can only come about if people go out and vote for change.”“This Friday, by choosing instead to vote for candidates and not parties,a new and better political reality can be made possible.”Voting in the 2014 Local and European Elections takes place this Friday 23rd May with polls open between 7am to 10pm.
