This is hard proof of the area’s declining draw, and its very real hardships for those who remain. But there is a bright side: Fewer people on the freeways because babies can’t drive. Anecdotally, we all know that life in the second-largest city in the country is getting hard – too many people, too many hassles, too much indifference and neglect by City Hall. Some days just normal things like getting to work, buying gas and shopping are a major undertaking that requires every ounce of resolve and patience. But figures just released by the California Department of Finance indicate that the quality of life in the Los Angeles region isn’t the draw it used to be. Maybe it is the traffic, maybe the gangs, maybe the high housing prices or the rotten schools or the poor local government. For whatever reason, about 45,000 more people left Los Angeles County than moved here since 2000.
